I had an interesting discussion the other day about dogs and breeds of dogs. A co-worker mentioned that she’s against engineering new breeds and then said something about engineering humans.
So here’s an ad hoc poll: Who feels it is ethical to genetically engineer a child, and to what degree?
Here are a few areas to think about…
- Detecting/repairing genetic birth defects?
- Encouraging a healthy physique (e.g. lowering chances of obesity, increasing metabolism, increasing cardiovascular stamina)?
- Stimulating intelligence or aptitudes?
- Choosing eye color, beauty, etc.? (à la carte)
I’ll withhold my own personal views on the matter until I tally the vote.
