Just veggin'

Goodbye, meatloaf. Fair thee well.

With the new year, Chrissa and I have decided to become vegetarians. We're not vegan, or anything like that. We're not even Orthodox vegetarians, so to speak. In fact, after one month of vegetarianism, we're planning on eating meat once or twice a month--and eat vegetarian the rest of the month.

I was a vegetarian once, at Scout Camp. The cook was a vegetarian and always made special exotic meals for herself, while the rest of us ate a rotating 2-week schedule. After a few weeks of the same ole' stuff, a few of us convinced the cook we'd become vegetarians and started eating her meals. Eventually Spaghetti Day rolled around and we snuck some meat sauce onto our plates but were caught...and thus ended my 1-week stint as a vegetarian. But I was living a lie.

I'm not a vegetarian out of any love for animals. To me it's more of a drastic diet which will force me to eat beans. There's one more thing, though. I once heard an NPR program, This American Life, where a guy "fasted" 1 month to rid his body of the "toxins" we have from the chemicals and preservatives we ingest. Apparently, your body starts ejecting a black sludge or something gross. I had similarly heard that we Americans have a stench about us from all the red meat we eat: it oozes from our pores and coats us. We can't smell it because we're around it all day...but foreigners remark on it. So, in a way, I like the idea of going through "detox." Maybe it's psychological, but I do feel better since I've started this.

And yet, the hamburgers are calling my name.

Chrissa hates it when I continue my blog in my comments, but...

After 2 weeks of veggin', I've decided that I don't really miss the taste of meat. When I think about meat I get this sticky, stringy feeling in my mouth. I think that what I like about meat is not the meat itself: it's the cheese and spices and sauces that are ON the meat.

The only exception might be deli-sliced meat. I miss that a lot.

exactly. i still eat chicken, shrimp, or salmon every once in a while, but too much meat consumption is hard on the system. Get into the Indian food, and you'll never EVER miss meat.

I'm not really anonymous. It's marci. I just can't remember my username. anyway, I've also become semi-vegetarian by default. I got no beef with beef, so to speak -- I just ended up liking vegetables so much that I often run out of room on my plate for meat (and often the carbs, too).

So, here's my lates favorite:

in olive oil, saute a litte rosemary, fresh garlic, and basil, then add some pine nuts, onions, and red peppers. Let them cook for a bit, then add broccoli (really small pieces) and a bunch of chopped tomatoes (carrots too, if you want). Let them steam for a bit by adding a small amount of water and covering with a lid. Then add mushrooms, zucchini, and chopped spinach.

To finish, add salt, a few dashes of tabasco, and some honey (or a bit of sugar) -- you don't need much honey or sugar -- just enough sweetness to bring out the salt and other seasonings.

Put the sauce over cooked Orzo (or any kind of pasta, really).

Call me if you want some more vegetarian meal ideas.

Good luck guys. Let's see if we can get Dad to go vegetarian for a month:)
