I have a sister who has a part-time gig with a certain multi-level marketing corporation. This multi-level marketing corporation happens to sell phone plans. Honestly it sounds like a good plan and a decent corporation (hence: my protecting their identity and my sister's).
But ... like most multi-level marketing jobs it has become an OBSESSION. You almost can't talk to my sister anymore without the phone plan coming up. I talked to her last night and we chit-chatted for about 10 minutes about this and that, then the conversation steered around to my phone plan and how much money I could be saving talking to her right then using it.
After I got off, I said to Chrissa: "Multi-level marketing is like cancer. Once it grabs a hold of someone it needs to be spread to someone else."
Then Chrissa made a clever observation: "You know, it's actually more like The Ring."
Brilliant.

For anyone who hasn't seen The Ring, it's about a video cassette which, once you watch it, needs to be copied and given to someone else within a week--otherwise, you'll die a horrible death.
Once Chrissa made that comment I decided that The Ring really is an allegory for our time.
