Poet spotlight: Hughes Mearns

I don't have anything novel to say today. I just received my Devotchka CD (that's actually supposed to have a backwards 'k' but my Cyrillic alphabet doesn't contain such a letter) and it is everything I dreamt of and more. Unfortunately, Chrissa hates it ... so I think I'm going to be listening to that sucker in the car, which is too bad since that's my "NPR time." Alas. I feel like a closet smoker or something. It's worth it though: they're a great band!

Marci just got back from India and from what I hear is still running on New Delhi time. My mom said that Marci couldn't tell anyone anything about her trip until she has a Family Home Evening with the family ... which means that I don't get to hear much for a little while. To be fair, Marci and Shauna are flying out to visit Texas in a couple of weeks so I'll be able to hear the narrative first-hand. She told me last night when I called that she didn't get me any Indian souvenirs -- just money. I told her that's fine: I've learned that a bunch of cheap foreign souvenirs aren't as cool when you get home and they're sitting in a box in your basement. It's better to save your money when travelling and just buying one or two expensive things for your living room. As to the money, I've been collecting foreign coins my whole life and I absolutely love expanding my collection.

On to the good stuff.

This is Hughes Mearns. I first heard this poem on a John Cusack movie, Identity. I researched Mr. Mearns and it turns out he was a 19th Century school superintendent and his poetry was mostly witty logic poems. I don't like any of his other stuff -- only this one.

Antigonish

As I was going up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish, I wish he'd stay away!

(There's more than one version of the poem but this is my favorite version.)

One final note: I won 4 hockey tickets yesterday on the radio! Yea for me.
